About Broome and Allen Scholarship Fund

Over One Hundred Grants Awarded since 2004

Joshua Haviv is a native Israeli of Iraqi heritage who is currently in a Ph.D program at CUNY, and completing his dissertation on the politics of Mizrachi identity in Israeli society. James Cassuto is an honorary boy scout with a passion for science, whose work at a research laboratory has attracted the attention of NASA. Fanny Rose Bangoura is a mother of two who will be attending medical school this fall at the University of Miami. She aspires to utilize an integrated holistic approach in her practice of medicine by combining the best of modern medical techniques with ancient traditions of healing.

Though their backgrounds and goals differ, the above three individuals share the honor of being named a Broome and Allen Scholar. They are part of a group of students who have been awarded this grant for tuition assistance in their academic studies as a result of their outstanding scholarship and community service.

The Broome & Allen Scholarship was founded over 60 years ago by a group of Sephardic businessmen determined to provide a summer vacation to children who otherwise would not be able to escape the hot and humid New York City summers. Over the years, the fund has enabled hundreds of children to enjoy their summer vacations far from the city’s heat. As times and circumstances changed, however, the scholarship evolved accordingly. Today, the Broome & Allen Scholarship provides grants to undergraduate and graduate students of Sephardic heritage and students concentrating in Sephardic studies. Once again, the Broome & Allen Scholarship has founds its niche, and is providing needed help to qualified individuals.

According to Aaron Assael, Broome & Allen Scholarship co-chair, the pool of applicants is increasingly competitive: "In recent year's applicants were all extremely bright and showed an active interest in their Sephardi heritage,” he noted. “It's good to see the young people of today take pride in their cultural and religious background. My hope is that they continue to be active members of their Sephardi communities because they are our future."

Grant recipients expressed their sincere appreciation in the many thank you letters that ASF has received since awarding the grants. One Broome & Allen Scholarship winner wrote, “Thank you for your generosity and aid... My Sephardic roots will forever be a part of me and it is through organizations like yours that people can hold on to their heritage while pursuing their goals."
